Dice is the oldest game known to man. The history of dice is nearly as old as mankind itself. As the history of other old casino games, the history of dice is also rather mysterious and uncertain. The beginning of the dice history dates back to ancient times therefore it is so difficult to discover the true history of this game. Dice are the oldest gaming and fortunetelling tool ever known. In ancient times people believed that the outcome of the throw is controlled by gods. Romans believed that the goddess Fortuna, the daughter of Zeus, determined the outcome of a throw. Casting dice was a way of choosing rulers, dividing the trophies of war and telling fortune. Fortune telling with dice is still used in modern progressive world. Ancient people used sea shells, fruit stones, pebbles and nut shells for gaming.
Beliefs about the dice origin
There are those who believe that gaming with dice was created by Roman soldiers. They made cubes out of knucklebones to entertain themselves. The cubic six-sided dice evolved from the ankle bones. Even today dice are sometimes called “bones”, while playing with dice is knowing as “rolling the bones”.
Others believe that dice were evolved from the game Hazard created by Englishmen. The origins of both games are the matter of debate. Also it is believed that craps in its modern outlook was shaped in the United States.
Dice prohibition
The development of dice encouraged cheaters to show off with their skills. Romans were especially famous for cheating. By 10th century dicing became so popular that army leaders had to prohibit dice gambling among soldiers to prevent them from gambling out all their possessions.
